Crowns Q & A

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a type of dental restoration used to repair cracked, chipped, or badly decaying teeth. If you develop a large cavity, root-canaled tooth or you damage a tooth as the result of a sports-related injury or automobile accident, as examples, Dr. Kim might recommend a dental crown.

Once in place, a crown covers the entire portion of your tooth that sits above the gum line, preventing further damage and restoring your chewing and biting abilities. There are many different types of dental crowns such as PFM (porcelain-fused metal crown, gold crown, but Dr. Kim usually recommends zirconia crowns. Zirconia is much tougher than porcelain and doesn’t crack or chip easily. In addition, Zirconia mimics the color and light-reflecting properties of your natural tooth enamel.

In addition, Dr. Kim offers a lifetime warranty on Zirconia crowns. So if you experience a fracture or chip, he can repair it at no cost.

What types of issues can dental crowns address?

Dental crowns are incredibly versatile. Dr. Kim might recommend a dental crown if you have a large cavity that’s too big for a filling. He might also recommend a dental crown to improve the appearance of a tooth that:

  • Is severely worn down
  • Is chipped
  • Is cracked
  • Has root canal therapy

If you need a root canal, you might also benefit from a dental crown. Following root canal treatment, your tooth is fragile and needs additional protection. A crown can prevent bad bacteria from causing further problems, such as an infection.

How do I know if I am a candidate for a dental crown?

To determine if you’re a candidate for a dental crown, make an appointment with Dr. Kim. Following an oral exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your symptoms, Dr. Kim can develop a treatment plan that aligns with your needs. If necessary, Dr. Kim might also recommend undergoing digital X-rays or a series of scans with Carestream Dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). This diagnostic imaging tool provides 3D images of your gums, tooth roots, and jawbones.

Do you offer same-day crowns?

Dr. Kim proudly offers same-day crowns using the CEREC® machine. If you need a crown, Dr. Kim takes digital impressions of your affected tooth. After uploading your impressions to a computer, Dr. Kim designs a crown and transfers your design to the CEREC machine. The CEREC machine mills your new crown in minutes. Afterward, Dr. Kim bonds the crown to your affected tooth. CEREC crowns fit twice as well as human-made crowns.
